Product details

Designed to bring depth and emotion to every word, the Byakudan Urushi Fountain Pen combines traditional Japanese lacquer craftsmanship with modern precision engineering.

Finished using the rare byakudan-nuri technique, layers of translucent lacquer and gold leaf create a surface that shifts with the light—subtle, luminous, and constantly changing.

Each pen carries a unique pattern, shaped by the hands of master craftsmen.

Built on a precisely engineered aluminum body, it offers a perfect balance of lightness and durability.

The slim, ergonomic form ensures comfort during extended writing, while maintaining a refined, elegant silhouette.

Equipped with a globally trusted SCHMIDT Medium (M) nib, the pen delivers smooth, stable ink flow—ideal for everyday writing, journaling, and signatures.

Its high-seal structure prevents ink from drying, allowing for a consistent writing experience even after periods of non-use.

The use of ebonite in the threading reduces wear and protects the nib, ensuring long-term reliability.

Compatible with international standard cartridges and converters, it allows you to enjoy a wide range of inks and personalize your writing experience.

Rooted in centuries of Japanese lacquer tradition and refined through modern engineering, this pen transforms writing into a quiet, intentional act.

Simple, precise, and expressive—this is more than a pen.
It’s a piece that evolves with you over time.

Byakudan Fountain Pen

Transcending time with the rare brilliance of the Byakudan-nuri technique.A symphony of high-performance alloy and the soul of a master lacquer craftsman.

A Precisely Designed and Completed Body

The manufacturer, which has a track record with famous brands and also handles the production of aerospace parts, crafts the ultra-high precision, well-balanced aluminum alloy body.

Manufactured under a “zero tolerance” standard using special machinery, it ensures unwavering reliability as a precision instrument with no microscopic deviations.

Casting the Magic of Byakudan onto a Fountain Pen

Uchiki Co., Ltd., the “Master Craftsman” in lacquerware, successfully applied the rare Byakudan-nuri technique to a fountain pen—a feat once thought impossible.

By layering transparent lacquer and gold powder over a base of red and black lacquer, each piece becomes a “living art” that shifts with light and deepens in character over time.

A special fountain pen thoughtfully designed for the writer.

A Writing Experience Born from Light and Lacquer

Writing instruments are no longer just tools.

By combining traditional Japanese urushi lacquer with precision engineering, this pen transforms everyday writing into a refined experience.

Sealed for Lasting Performance

The precisely engineered high-seal structure effectively prevents ink from drying.

Even if you haven't had the chance to use the pen for a while, you can take it out and experience a smooth writing experience, and each opening and closing offers the reassuring, crafted tightness of a skilled artisan.

Byakudan-nuri: A Finish That Shifts with Light

For the pens, we are using a traditional Yamanaka lacquer technique known as byakudan-nuri, with gold flakes shimmering beneath a translucent lacquer, changing appearance with the angle of the light.

FAQ

Does the lacquer (urushi) finish require special care?

While urushi is incredibly durable, it is sensitive to prolonged direct sunlight (UV rays). We recommend storing your pen in a cool, shaded place when not in use. For cleaning, simply wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth.

Is there any risk of skin irritation from the urushi lacquer?

Once urushi is completely cured (hardened), it is chemically stable and safe to touch. We ensure a rigorous curing process for all our pens before shipping, so there is no risk of the "urushi rash" typically associated with wet lacquer.

Will the pattern of my pen look exactly like the photos on the project page?

As each pen is hand-lacquered, subtle variations exist. Notably, the urushi's luster deepens and becomes more transparent after about six months of use. Your pen will not only be unique from day one but will grow even more beautiful over time.

What nib sizes are available, and can they be swapped?

Each pen comes standard with a Medium (M) nib. If you prefer a Fine (F) or Broad (B) size, you will need to purchase an additional nib unit separately. These units are designed to be interchangeable within the same international standard.

Does the pen use cartridges or a converter?

The Byakudan pen is compatible with both international standard cartridges and converters. Each pen comes with one high-quality converter included in the box so you can use your favorite bottled inks immediately.
